Housing rehabilitation is always an exciting task, even more when this building is in the same family for 3 generations. In our understanding intervene in this context mainly demands that all the spatial qualities and existing materials to be preserved must be identified, but also is needed to acknowledge the existence of memories and affections for this house by the family that wishes to inhabit it.
Combine past and present was the defined strategy: trough the reinterpretation of the existing spatial configuration adapting it to the new way of living desired by the client, and restoring always as possible existing materials and architectonic elements, designing changes whenever necessary, reaffirming the constant dialogue between these two realities.
Being located in a rural context reflected in the house typology, where there is a clear division between the ground floor, locally named as “Loja”, and the upper level where relies the housing itself. In past times this Loja was storage for agriculture activities, being in a neglected state in the present. The first floor remains as housing, defined by several corridors and rooms, and as a result there is a space in the center of it without direct natural light.
Our proposal intends to clarify the house interior circulation, redesign some rooms with more generous areas, and establishing a proper connection to the ground level from the first floor, in order to extend the housing space throughout this new leisure area.
In the exterior a barbecue area was added and the free ground was suitably designed to accommodate green areas in order to create a relaxing atmosphere.
