The informal economy has created jobs and improved living conditions in more than one favela – it is often the favela’s main employer, and it supplies vital goods and services to low-income families.
The vitality of this market is the defining characteristic of the cultural and social identity of Rio das Pedras, a slum located in the west side of Rio de Janeiro City. The proposal develops a set of urban and architectonic micro-tools that triggers new dynamics in the local economy and cultivates a relationship between the formal and informal.
Used in different contexts, these tools generate unique urban scenarios. Without focusing on one particular scenario some of the more promising tools are developed in greater detail.
The tool is mightier that the solution!
